On saturday 1st August we took the 0800 ferry from Dover to Dunkirk, the reasoning behind this was to stay away from the French motorway structure which tends to draw you towards Paris.
We rode through Belgium,Netherlands and Germany on A10, for the first night we camped in Bad Wildbad in the black forest region of Germany approx 438 miles from Dunkirk. We arrived about 1745 hours.
The next morning we rode on to Kaunteral, Austria camping alngside the wiesseespitze hotel(hotel dedicated for bikers) this ride was approx 260 miles and led us through some nice road structures as the Alps loomed. We arrived about 1500hours.
(DON'T FORGET, Austrian motorway tax, VIGNETTE 7.50EUROS 8 DAYS)
We used this campsite as our base for 4 nights.
We rode on the first day up through the Kaunertal valley all the way upto the Kaunertal glacier which stands at 2750m(if you get the chair lift you go up to 3105m). This was a difficult ride the weather changed, constant rain combined with the low temps at altitude challenged our grit.
On Tuesday we rode to the Oeztal valley and turned left after the ski resort of Solden heading to the Timmelsjoch pass. Tariff on this road 13 euros return trip, what a fantastic pass running over into Italy....a must do for any biker. Its about 120 miles round trip from base.
Wednesday saw us ride to the Passo di Stelvio, again superb roads and exciting views as you ride from Austria ino Italy. The pass itself....well spectacular...mind out for the odd looney who thinks their at Donington!!
No tariff, Gr8 views and plenty of bikers at the top. Check out the border cafe(bacon and eggs) made the day. Again from Kaunteral approx 120 miles round trip. You can extend this by going over the top into Switzerland back around about 250 miles then.
